Surf Decoration

This is an easy way to transform a plain old bed skirt into a surfer’s dream. It is easy to do - you do not even have to be particularly crafty to make it either! Just get a the natural grass skirt (may also be referred to as rafia) that you would decorate a bancquet table with at a party store like www.orientaltrading.com making sure that you measure the circumference of the bed first, since you may need to buy several packages to make it fit all the way around the bed.

I have found it easier to work with the bed skirt while it is in place on the bed, but it is just a matter of preference. Yes, it will be too long, but that is a good thing -  you won’t have to worry about the drop length - just trim it to your liking once it has been fininshed.  Beds are all different heights, so this method will come in handy especially for those higher, hard to fit beds.

You won’t need the ties at each end of the skirt, so either trim them, or lay them back along the top edge and fasten down with glue or stitching. Line up the edge of the grass skirt to the edge of the bed skirt and fasten temporarily with tape, or safety pins, working around the bed and joining with another skirt when you run to the end of the one you are working with, if necessary. If you need to join additional skirts just overlap slightly, so you avoid any gaps.

Once you have it up, then you will go back and either hand sew to secure it, or if you are experienced with hot glue, that will work too (but be careful!). Those fond of velcro have the ability to remove the skirt for washing - but that much velcro can be expensive!  I prefer to hand sew, using beige thread and a quick whip stitch (a basic over/under stitch - so easy a 2nd grader can do it!) to secure the top edge.

Lastly, with the skirt in place on the bed, trim the grass all the way around so it meets with the floor.
